2006-04-24, Intech Automation Services - In November of 2005, Intech Automation Services installed the latest in machine vision servo control systems into one of the largest carpet manufacturers in the world. In the past, operators manually guided slitting knives to run parallel to the carpet edge. It is common for a 15-foot wide carpet to track off of center + / - one inch per side. The misguided slitting blades would regularly cut into carpet patterns, and cut the rugs too narrow, resulting in scrapped profits.
“There is a tremendous amount of material waste due to the errors in manual slitting”, stated IAS president Jon Colier. “Manually guiding the knives might have worked in the past, but not any more”. Due to the continuous increase in carpet finishing speeds realized by upgrading their coating line, the waste caused by operator errors was greatly increasing.
IAS used a high-speed servomotor in conjunction with a DVT 540 machine vision camera for the system. The process is accurate to within 0.125”, and the slitter position updates every 250 milliseconds. “We knew the system worked when all of the operators had left and were working on the carpet roll-up station”, said the plant manager. “The accuracy of the slitting has improved all of the processes downstream of the coater”.
